What the business description does - and does not - do
The 750-character description on your Google Business Profile is not a ranking factor in the way keywords in your business name or category are. Google has been consistent about this. What it does influence is conversion: it appears when someone taps through to your profile, at the exact moment they are deciding whether to call you or the next result.
It has also grown in importance for AI-generated answers. When a language model summarises local options, the profile description is one of the few pieces of self-authored text it has to work from — which makes clarity about what you do and where you do it genuinely valuable.
What each input means
- Length
- 750 characters maximum, but only the first 250 or so appear before a "more" link on mobile. Everything that matters belongs in that opening window.
- What to include
- What you do, who you serve, the areas you cover, what makes you a different choice, and how long you have been doing it. Specifics outperform adjectives at every point.
- What is prohibited
- No URLs, no phone numbers, no promotional or sales language, no pricing offers, and no claims about competitors. Google rejects descriptions containing these, sometimes silently.
- Tone
- Plain and factual. The description sits beside reviews and photos; overwritten marketing copy reads as less credible in that context, not more.
What actually moves Map Pack ranking
Worth knowing so you spend effort proportionately. The description is a conversion asset; these are the ranking levers.
| Primary category | Very high | The single most influential on-profile setting. Choose the most specific accurate one. |
|---|---|---|
| Proximity to searcher | Very high | Largely outside your control, and why service-area targeting matters. |
| Review quantity and recency | High | A steady flow beats a large historical total. |
| Business name relevance | High | Genuine name only - keyword stuffing risks suspension. |
| Citation consistency | Moderate | Matching name, address and phone across directories. |
| Profile description | Low for ranking | But meaningful for conversion and AI summarisation. |
Common mistakes
Keyword stuffing the description
It does not help ranking and reads badly to the customer deciding whether to call. The cost is real and the benefit is zero.
Adding a phone number or URL
Both are prohibited and both are already displayed elsewhere on the profile. Including them risks rejection of the whole description.
Burying the service area
For service businesses, the towns you cover are among the most useful facts a reader needs. They belong in the first sentence or two, not the last.
Writing it once and forgetting it
Services change, coverage areas expand. A description describing a business you no longer are undermines the credibility of everything else on the profile.
Treat the first 250 characters as the whole description and everything after as a bonus most people will never expand. If a stranger read only that opening and could correctly say what you do, where you do it, and why they might pick you, it is working. If they would need the rest to answer those questions, the important material is in the wrong order.
